For Paul Postma, the 2013-14 season holds as much promise as it does questions.
For the Winnipeg Jets, the most telling question is whether he is fit to be a full-time NHL defenseman 82 games a year.
In 34 games last season, Postma was used mostly as a fifth or sixth defenseman and the lockout-shortened season provided both parties with a chance to see what each other could offer.
With four goals, five assists and a minus five rating and six penalty minutes, Postma did show offensive flairs, including a multi-goal game, but his defense was suspect at times and if it weren't for a serious injury to teammate Zach Redmond, Postma may have never gotten to play as much as he did.
Either way, Postma signed a one-way contract this summer and is looking to not be starting the year in St. John's but in Winnipeg.
With Jacob Trouba likely to stick with the team to start the season, Postma may be seeing some of the games from the press box, but his versatility, his youth, and his potential is something the Jets still want to keep in their arsenal for now.
If you were any other team, wouldn't you be interested in a young defenseman with offensive punch?
In junior, Postma reached 84 points in his final year with the Calgary Hitmen and managed 42 points the year before. He has also posted favourable increasing numbers in the AHL in points – 29 in 63 games (09-10), 45 in 69 games (10-11), 44 in 56 games (11-12), and 18 in 27 games (12-13).
For the Red Deer native, the sky is the limit. For him, he hopes that it will get there this season in Winnipeg.
